Diabetic Eye Screening

Why is it important?
Diabetes can damage the blood vessels in the retina that can cause vision loss or even blindness if untreated. Early detection through screening is crucial.

Who should get screened?
All people with diabetes aged 12 and over should have an annual eye screening.

What happens during a screening?
We take photos of the back of your eyes to check for any signs of damage. The screening itself is painless and takes about 15 minutes.

How often should I get screened?
At least every 2 years.

How can I prepare for a screening?
Wear your glasses or contact lenses as normal, bring a list of your current medications, and let us know if you have any questions.

Additional tips
If you experience any changes in your vision, such as blurred vision, floaters, or flashes of light, see your doctor right away.

Diabetic Eye Screening

Important information about appointments

  • Arranging appointments
Patient appointments are usually arranged via the Homerton Hospital

  • No driving
    Patients must not drive
after screening as dilation drops used in the process may affect your driving until the effects have worn-off. Tropicamide drops are commonly used in optometry and the effects last several hours.

  • Results
Pictures produced in the process will be sent to the hospital for further evaluation. The patient will receive feedback by post within 3 weeks.
  • Sight test also requried within last 2 years
Patients must have had a sight test within the last 2 years. If not, we can book this on the same day of their appointment.
